Physicians or doctors (MDs) diagnose and treat diseases, injuries and other disorders. They also work to promote good health and prevent illness. Physicians often follow other health professionals, such as auxiliary physicians, nurses and technicians.

Physicians provide diagnosis, treatment and counseling for people with diseases, illnesses or injuries. Some of these many responsibilities include patient research, patient information collection, diagnostic tests and discussion of test results. Physicians fall into two main categories: doctors (M.D.) and Osteopathic medicine (D.O.S). Both types of doctors treat patients, but D.O. also uses prophylactic treatment and comprehensive treatment. In the medical field, doctors usually have specialization.

Most American doctors are directly involved with patient care. Only about a tenth of the United States’ doctors work in areas other than patient care, such as administration or investigation. Most doctors who provide patient care have their own practices or they are partners in group work. Others work all the time in a hospital.
