The lifeguards protect people from drowning in the water. They should be expert swimmers and should be able to keep their breath underwater for a long time. Lifeguards are trained to perform CPR mouth-to-mouth and in case of heart failure, give CPR. They must also be trained to give first aid.

Lifeguards work on public pools, beaches, gyms, sports academies etc. They are usually sitting in a tall chair and giving binoculars so they can see everything in detail. Their uniform is a swimsuit, as it should be whenever the situation is in place.

Lifeguards should stay in shape and in good health because they must have good resistance. They also have to be strong in lifting heavy people that are drowned. Although the media has shown it as a glamorous profession, in reality, it is a profession that has many responsibilities.

Lifeguards can earn a decent life and no formal education is required for this job. However, one must be an expert swimmer to do this and fitness is also mandatory.

Duty and Responsibility Lifeguards

  • The lifeguards is responsible for all bathers on the beach or in the pool
  • They must know first aid, CPR, and mouth-to-mouth
  • They must be good swimmers and they must also be able to swim under the water and often catch the drowning person.
  • Lifeguards must be in excellent shape to have good resistance to long and deep swimming
  • They have to train new lifeguards in order to save people who are drowned
  • They need to teach younger individuals about child safety and educate them about the awareness
  • Lifeguards used in public pools are also responsible for maintaining the security standards of that pool
  • They must ensure that the water is clean and that the chlorine level in the water is fine
  • Lifeguards should be careful when children are swimming, as they are more prone to accidents
  • To implement the pool rules in a suitable, fair and impartial manner and explain the (rule) rule (s) if necessary.
  • Help clients in need, but without compromising the security of others using the Natatorium.
  • Must be in accordance with the rules and procedures listed in the Aquatics Staff Manual.
  • Attend all staff meetings and evaluate as desired.
  • Get on time and cover all the default hours.
  • If he/she cannot work, the Lifeguards must find an authorized substitute.
  • Maintaining an adequate level of physical ability to perform all the work competently. 1,000 yards of swimming per week is mandatory.
  • Attend cleaning of Natatorium and equipment.
  • Performs other work related tasks as assigned.

Education Required by a Professional Lifeguards

  • Without formal education, it is necessary to be a lifeguard
  • A certificate from Red Cross must be required to be a lifeguard that must be renewed every three years.
  • Excellent swimming and fitness skills

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of equipment and pool maintenance.
  • Knowing methods and rescue procedures, including standard first aid and resuscitation.
  • Knowledge of rules and regulations governing public behavior in swimming pools.
  • Knowledge of sanitation and chlorination of pools.
  • An expert in applying rescue techniques.

  • Ability to respond quickly and quietly to emergencies.
  • Ability to perform rescue operations, first aid and CPR.
