As a firefighter, you will respond to emergencies and protect people, the environment and property from all kinds of accidents and emergencies.
You will work closely with the local community to increase their level of fire safety awareness to prevent fires and accidents in the first place.
By promoting fire safety and enforcing fire protection regulations in public and commercial buildings, you will act and advise on all matters relating to the protection of life and property from fire outbreak and other hazards.
In the role of a firefighter, you will continue to learn and update your knowledge through a series of lectures, exercises, practices and training that are integral and durable and also part of the job.
Responsibilities
- Firefighters carry out a wide range of tasks, some you will do every day, while others are less regular. They include:
- Immediate response to safety and emergency calls and help requests.
- Attending to emergency assistance including fires, traffic accidents, floods, terrorist incidents, spills of hazardous substances and accidents on the rail and aircraft.
- Save people and animals trapped.
- Minimize distress and suffering, even give first aid before the arrival of emergency staff.
- Protect your own and other people personal safety and security at any time.
- Maintaining and inspecting the site after dealing with the incident.
- Take the time to get to know the local streets, roads and buildings so that you can quickly and effectively respond to emergency calls.
- Inspect and maintain the unit (fire truck) and its equipment, participate in the fire hydrant test and review the emergency water supply.
- Perform exercise and physical training and participate in training for techniques, use of equipment and related issues.
- Maintaining the significant level of physical fitness required to perform all duties of a firefighter.
- Educate and inform the public to promote fire safety through discussions in schools and local organizations, as well as home visits to advice etc.
- Maintaining ties with the local community.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or its equivalent GED; and
- Must be at least 18 years old at the time of application;
- Emergency Medical Technician’s Certification; or
- Any other equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the knowledge and skills needed to do the job.
